Education Initiative – The Next G&S Generation
The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore, the first re-arranged musical scores for schools have been completed and are ready for use in schools.
“This is a significant step forward for our schools programme,” says Ian Smith on behalf of the Gilbert and Sullivan Association. “As far as we are aware this is the first complete score of any of the operas that has been produced especially for children’s voices. I am delighted that the work has been undertaken by James Newby, the festival’s first musical director who already enjoys an international reputation as James Newby Music for his orchestrations of the shows which have literally been played around the world.
“It has taken 127 years to get to where we are. I hope it has been worth waiting for and that these first children’s editions of Pirates of Penzance and Pinafore will herald an awakening of interest in performing the shows in schools not only in the UK but around the world.
The scores, complete with the dialogue from the Ian Bradley annotated G & S, features other useful information for schools including a full synopsis of the story; a detailed description of the characters and a glossary of musical terms and explanation of some of the more unusual words. A comprehensive teacher’s pack is also available.
